The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is investigating after a dead body was found in downtown St. John's on Tuesday evening.

Police responded to the area of Water Street near Springdale Street around 8:40 p.m. Tuesday after being notified of the body, which was found a short time later, according to a news release.

The RNC says the death is suspicious and police are working with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to identify the deceased and the cause of death.

Speaking with reporters on Wednesday, RNC media relations officer Const. James Cadigan said the deceased is a woman but didn't provide details beyond that.

Police are asking the public to report any suspicious activity they may have seen in the area, and are seeking any information or video of the area taken in recent days.

"We believe this may have unfolded in the past few days here in the downtown St. John's area," Cadigan said.

"It's a tight-knit area. You know, there's a lot of businesses, residences, and, you know, a lot of foot traffic in the area. … Any small detail can be of great value."
