VPD investigating after man shot dead in South Vancouver

The Vancouver Police Department says it's investigating the death of a 30-year-old man who was shot in South Vancouver last night.

Police say Amin Shahin Shakur was shot near Main Street and East 48th Avenue just after 11 p.m. PT Monday.

Shakur died at the scene, said VPD Const. Tania Visintin.

The victim did not have an extensive police history, according to the force.

It is the city's eighth homicide of 2020.

Early Tuesday the scene of the shooting was blocked off by police tape, and evidence markers were seen on the ground while investigators combed the site.

Timothy Tejuco, who lives across the street, says he and his wife heard four loud pops shortly before 11 p.m. Monday

"My wife thought it was gunshots, but I said, 'No, it's probably just firecrackers. Don't worry about it,'" he said.

About 20 minutes later, he says, he saw a huge police presence arrive at the scene.

"I've grown up in this area my whole life. Things like this just don't happen," said Tejuco. "You hear on the news and you just think to yourself 'this would never happen here.'"

While it isn't confirmed, Const. Visintin says the homicide appears to be targeted and there is no risk to the public.

Police are asking anyone with surveillance or dashcam footage to contact the Vancouver Police Department.
