Three police officers have been hurt after a crowd of more than 50 people threw fireworks and missiles at them.

Police were attacked when responding to a report a female officer had been assaulted on Moston Lane, Manchester, just before 9.30pm on Friday.

Shortly after officers arrived, large groups of people started throwing fireworks and other missiles at them, resulting in more patrols being sent.

The extra patrols were deployed to Penn Street, Ebsworth Street and the surrounding areas of Moston to disperse offenders.

Officers remained in the area overnight as a precaution and a dispersal order was put in place until 6.30am on Saturday.

"Officers will be remaining in the area over night as a precaution.

"This has been a multi-agency response from police, fire and the ambulance service and I would like to thank our emergency services colleagues for their assistance this evening.

"I would also like to thank members of the public for their patience while we continue to deal with this incident.

"As a result of this incident three officers have sustained injuries, thankfully these are minor injuries due to the quick response of their colleagues.
