Police probe connection between woman's death, Via train incident

Toronto police continued their investigation Saturday into a Scarborough woman's death Friday. Police were saying little about a suspect as they investigated an incident a short time later in which a man was hit by a Via Rail train in the east end.

"A female was found with obvious signs of trauma — she was pronounced dead a short time later. Homicide squad is now investigating," Det. Andy Singh told CBC News.

There has been no confirmation of the victim's age, except that she was in her thirties. Police said she was a mother of three.

Shortly after her death at a townhouse on Danzig Street, a man was struck by a Via Rail train near the Markham Road overpass.

He was treated for critical injuries at Sunnybrook trauma centre.

The incident forced a halt in eastbound VIA service and the Lakeshore East GO Line for several hours, forcing many commuters to seek alternate ways to get in and out of the east end.

Meanwhile, police were saying little about whether the two incidents on Friday were connected.

"We are looking into that avenue," said Singh.

"Unfortunately right now we don't have any confirmation, but that is something we're looking into at this point," he said, adding that a connection is "not ruled out at this time."

However, on Friday night, police did tell a local Toronto news station that the "description of the man who jumped in front of the train is very similar to the description of the deceased's ex-boyfriend."

Det.-Sgt. Stephen Ryan also told CP24 that "the deceased's ex-boyfriend was on bail with conditions not to associate or communicate with the deceased as a result of charges that were laid against him last year."
