Police respond to men wielding meat cleavers, axe in separate incidents
Toronto police responded to two separate incidents — one involving a man wielding two meat cleavers in the middle of the street and the other involving a different man who assaulted his roommate with an axe — in the early morning hours Thursday.
The first occurred at around 2:20 a.m. ET, when police received a call from a member of the public saying a man was standing in the road near the intersection of Queen and Bathurst Streets waving two meat cleavers.
The man then ran into an apartment that was not his own, causing the occupants to flee, police said.
Police arrived at the scene and attempted to engage the man, but he was unresponsive. The Emergency Task Force was then called in to assess the situation, police said.
ETF officers entered the building, reportedly tasered the man and extracted him from the apartment. The suspect was sent to hospital.
Police say the man is not under arrest and that he suffers from mental illness.
About 20 minutes later at 2:40 a.m. ET, police responded to a call on Augusta Avenue, where a man assaulted his roommate with handle-end of an axe.
He was arrested at the scene. It is not yet clear if he will be charged.
