Police clear Rothesay scene after search for gunman

Police officers cleared the scene of School Avenue near Fairvale Elementary School in Rothesay, N.B. Saturday night, after searching and not finding a possible armed man.

Kennebecasis Regional Police Force responded to a call they received Saturday evening of a sighting of an armed individual.

Police released a statement on Facebook, advising the public they were searching the area as a precaution.

At 9:30 p.m. the police force posted an update on Facebook.

"Police were unable to confirm any sighting of an individual who appeared to be armed with a firearm. School Avenue and the surrounding area were searched extensively with negative results," the post said.

A neighbour told CBC News he saw a police car with flashing lights pull up around 6 p.m. He said an officer motioned him to go inside his home but the officer didn't say why. He said later, two other unmarked police cars pulled up. Officers got out, put flak jackets on and had rifles drawn.

The man said the officers appeared to be searching a wooded area near Fairvale Elementary School. The wooded area is between two residential neighbourhoods and train tracks run through it.
