Police locate person of interest after girl, 14, finds substance on her back at the mall

Winnipeg police have identified and interviewed a person of interest after a 14-year-old girl found what police believe may have been a bodily fluid on her back while at St. Vital Centre last Sunday.

On Saturday, police released an image obtained from mall security showing a man, and with help from the public he was positively identified.

The man co-operated with investigators and charges will only be considered "once the forensic examination of the substance seized has been verified and concluded," police said in a news release.

Around 1:50 p.m. last Sunday, a group of teenage girls were shopping when a man started following them, police said. The girls went into a store to try and evade him.

Police said the man appeared to have sprayed or deposited an unknown substance on the clothing of one of the girls.

Const. Rob Carver couldn't confirm what the substance was on Friday but said "there is a concern that there may be bodily fluids involved."

The sex crimes unit is investigating and DNA tests on the substance are being done.

Anyone with further information about the incident or a suspect is asked to contact investigators at 204-986-6245 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
