2 men arrested in separate border jumping incidents

RCMP in Langley, B.C., say two incidents of motorcyclists jumping the U.S.-Canada border Thursday afternoon were unrelated.

Spokeswoman Holly Largy said an initial report came in about a motorcyclist who had illegally crossed the border near Abbotsford — not at a crossing — heading south.

U.S. Border Patrol officers apprehended that suspect and then told Mounties they were following a second motorcyclist they had observed crossing a ditch to jump the border north into Canada near Aldergrove.

RCMP took over the pursuit with Air One, their own helicopter and followed the suspect to Willowbrook Mall in Langley.

There, the suspect ditched his motorcycle which police said they determined was stolen.

Largy said officers searched for the suspect in the mall but were unsuccessful. They found video footage that led them to identify the suspect as a 49-year-old man well known to Langley police.

Police then went to his home where they observed him getting into a vehicle.

Officers followed the suspect until he got out of the vehicle of his own accord, at which point, police say, he was arrested.

Largy said police will be recommending charges to the Crown once the investigation is complete.

U.S. Border Patrol confirmed the Lynden Police Department arrested a motorcyclist in Washington State.

Both Canadian and U.S. authorities said the two incidents were unrelated.
