Police arrest driver of car that flipped, hit tree south of Montreal

Provincial police have arrested a man they believe was driving a car that crashed into a tree early this morning.

Around 1 a.m., the car was travelling south on Route 221 in Saint-Cyprien-de-Napierville, from the Canada-U.S. border, when it went off the road, flipped and hit a tree.

There were two other people in the car. They were seriously injured.

Police said they believed the driver fled the scene on foot. They brought in their canine unit to search for him.

An SQ spokesperson says a citizen who lives near the site of the accident called police and alerted them to a man near his home around 8 a.m.

Officers arrived and there was a brief foot chase before the suspect was arrested.

He is facing charges of leaving the scene of an accident causing injury.

He was taken to hospital for treatment and could be charged this afternoon or tomorrow morning.
