Police divers found the body of a missing swimmer in Lac-Simon, Que., Tuesday evening.

Officers with the Sûreté du Québec and the MRC Papineau were called to the lake in the Outaouais region northeast of Gatineau shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday.

A group had been swimming in the lake when some began to struggle in the water, according to Marc Tessier, a media relations officer with the Sûreté du Québec. All but one were rescued by bystanders.

They had been swimming within the buoyed area at the beach, Tessier told Radio-Canada, but that even within that area, there is a significant drop-off in the water.

Divers found the body of a man in his 20s just before 9 p.m.

Tessier said paramedics treated several people at the beach for shock.

A section of the beach remained closed Tuesday evening while police investigated.
