Police seek suspects in 2 stabbings in Scarborough in 2 days

Toronto police are seeking suspects in two stabbings in Scarborough in the past two days but say it is too early in the investigation to determine if the incidents are related.

Const. David Hopkinson of Toronto police said investigators have to interview witnesses and the surviving victim before they will be able to say whether the Friday stabbing at the Scarborough Centre RT station prompted the Saturday stabbing near Town Centre Court and Borough Drive.

Both stabbings occurred near the Scarborough Town Centre. The first was fatal.

"We have to investigate everything that happened," Hopkinson said Sunday.

"We try never to speculate. After we have spoken to witnesses, we will be able to determine if there was any retaliation involved."

On Saturday night, police received a call about a stabbing on at 8 p.m. at Town Centre Court and Borough Drive. A 17-year-old male was injured in that incident and taken to hospital.

Hopkinson could not confirm if the stabbing occurred at the Scarborough YMCA.

Toronto paramedics said the teen suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries. He was in stable condition with vital signs when found by police.

On Friday night, police received a call about a stabbing at about 9:20 p.m. at the Scarborough Centre RT station near McCowan and Ellesmere roads. The station is part of the Toronto Transit Commission's Line 3.

A 15-year-old boy, identified by family members as Kareem Deerr, died of his injuries in hospital. Police said the fatal stabbing occurred after two groups of people crossed paths in the station.

Family and friends held a candlelight vigil for Deerr on Saturday night. The second stabbing occurred as the vigil for Deerr was ending.
