Police seeking identity of human remains found near Innisfail

Investigators are working to identify human remains found in central Alberta over the weekend.

The remains were found Sunday morning at a rural site about 10 kilometres west of Innisfail.

As is the case when police can’t immediately determine the cause of death, investigators are treating the case as suspicious.

“We treat all found human remains as suspicious,” RCMP Sgt. Tim Taniguchi said.

Following the discovery, RCMP investigators aided by a canine unit and local search-and-rescue volunteers conducted a ground search of the area.

The remains are now being examined at the medical examiner’s office in Calgary, with assistance from a forensic anthropologist.

The medical examiner’s office usually consults forensic anthropologists in cases when an absence of evidence makes it more difficult to identify remains.

Investigators will try to positively identify the remains through dental records or DNA analysis, Taniguchi said.
