2 people injured, shots fired at police before suspects arrested in northeast Edmonton

Northeast Edmonton shooting victim dies, suspects charged with first-degree murder

A shooting Saturday night sent two people to hospital, and police say officers came under gunfire when they tried to pursue the suspects involved.

Police were first called at around 9 p.m. to the area of 436 BrintnellBlvd. in northeast Edmonton for reports of a shooting.

When they arrived, they found a man and woman who had been shot. Police say two men were seen running from the area and fled in a minivan.

Police then tried to stop the minivan in the area of 129th Avenue and 69th Street. The vehicle did not stop, and shots were fired at police from the vehicle.

The pursuit continued to 130th Avenue and 88th Street, where the two men left the minivan and took off on foot. Police arrested them in a field a short distance away, and found two firearms nearby.

Police say the two men in custody are believed to be involved in the shooting that wounded two people near Brintnell Blvd., and they are not looking for any more suspects.

The man and woman who suffered gunshot wounds remain in hospital. The woman's injuries are non life-threatening, but the man has serious injuries. No officers were injured.

Rob Boyd lives in the area of 129th Avenue and 69th street. He said he heard gunshots Saturday night around 9:30 p.m. while watching TV.

He's lived in the area since 2002, he said, and it's the first time he's ever heard anything like it in the usually quiet neighbourhood.

"I knew what it was right away, right away. I knew right away there were gunshots," he said. "Just gunshots and sirens, and it was over in 10 seconds."

Changkuoth Tharjjiiath and Trey Benzo were playing basketball in the same neighbourhood when they saw a red minivan drive by quickly with a police vehicle right behind it.

The minivan crashed into a pole, they said.

"We heard gun shots and we went to go see what it was," Benzo said. "There's cops with guns out. We were going to run home, but we wanted to find out what was going to happen.

"I've never seen this in my life."
