Toronto police are warning drivers to "be careful" after two attempted car-jackings in North York in less than an hour early Sunday.

Const. David Hopkinson, spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service, said police have issued a public safety alert about the incidents, both of which occurred near coffee shops.

"We are warning members of the public, if they are going to be out and about this morning, please be careful, lock your doors, have a good look at who may be around you," he said.

"We don't want this to happen to anyone else."

In both incidents, two men on foot approached female drivers sitting in their cars. The vehicles were either stopped or parked.

Black handgun seen

The suspects produced a black handgun, ordered the women to leave and said they would shoot them if they didn't get out. The men, however, did not seize control of the cars and fled in a nearby white van.

Hopkinson declined to say why the men did not steal the cars.

Police received a call about the first attempt car-jacking at Victoria Park Avenue and Cassandra Boulevard, north of Lawrence Avenue East, at about 7:22 a.m.

Less than 40 minutes later, police received a call about the second attempted car-jacking, at Wilson Avenue and Tippet Road, near Allen Road and Highway 401, at 8:03 a.m.

No one hurt

No one was injured in either incident.

"It was only by good fortune that the cars weren't stolen and no one was hurt," he said. "This is something for the public to be cautious of."

Police describe both suspects as black, with dark complexions, slim builds, about six feet tall, and 20 to 30 years of age.

The first suspect was reportedly wearing a grey jacket, while the second suspect was reportedly wearing a black jacket with a red shirt.

Police issued public safety alerts when they want to warn the public and have specific advice, Hopkinson said.
