Police warn drivers to expect slow commute on Friday

It will be another slow commute for Edmonton drivers Friday morning.

While plows are already out and most of the main arterial roads mainly cleared, drifting snow and blustery conditions are still making driving along some of the city’s residential roads and alleys difficult.

Edmonton police are urging drivers to give themselves extra time on their commute.

Environment Canada says the snow will begin to taper off throughout the day as the system continues moving east. Conditions in Edmonton and surrounding communities are expected to improve by mid-afternoon.

Up to 30 additional centimetres of snow may still fall in some areas of central Alberta, however.

This weekend, temperatures are expected to drop well below normal for this time of year.

Environment Canada is recommending Edmontonians and many across central Alberta to postpone non-essential travel until conditions improve.

School bus service in Elk Island, Sturgeon County, Parkland County and Wolf Creek has been cancelled for the day, although classes are still in session.

On Thursday, police say they were called out to 135 crashes around Edmonton; of those, five involved injuries and 14 were hit-and-runs.
