Poll: Brad Wall support solid, Sask. Party lags NDP in Regina

New poll shows people approve of government's response to Husky oil spill

Premier Brad Wall is still Mr. Popularity, but his Saskatchewan Party is not as well loved in the capital city, a poll says.

According to a survey of 1,690 people conducted by Mainstreet Research for Postmedia Aug. 22-23, Wall's approval rating is still hovering around 65 per cent, but support for Wall's party has fallen by almost six per cent since June.

The Sask. Party still has a big lead over the New Democrats — with 46 per cent still supporting the governing party, compared to 30 per cent who would vote for the NDP if an election were to be held today.

However, it's a different situation in Regina, where the NDP enjoys 39 per cent support, compared to 32 per cent for the Sask. Party. The rest of the respondents said they supported other parties or were undecided.

The poll was conducted after the Husky oil spill in the North Saskatchewan River.

David Valentin, the the executive vice president of Mainstreet Research, says recent talk of selling SaskTel is also not helping the party's support in Regina. Wall's popularity persists, however, he said.

"Brad Wall's approval rating is sort of being decoupled and untangled from Saskatchewan Party support and I think what that would suggest is people have begun to realize he may not run again," Valentin said.

A poll with a sample size of 1,690 is considered accurate to plus or minute 2.38 per cent, 19 times out of 20.
