Popular grocery chain is opening newest Johnson County store by the end of this year
Construction is underway for Aldi’s newest Overland Park location.
The 12055 Metcalf Ave. spot is opening by the end of the year, according to the company.
The discount grocery store filed an application to move into the former Buybuy Baby spot in March. Its plans were approved by the city in May.
The new Aldi will be across the street from a Whole Foods, at 11900 Metcalf Ave. Aldi has a few more locations in the metro, including at 8333 W. 95th St. in Overland Park.
Children’s retailer Buybuy Baby moved into the spot in 2011 and closed last year after parent company Bed Bath & Beyond filed for bankruptcy.
Before that, national bookstore chain Borders Books Music Cafe operated there since 1994. It also had a location at 9180 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park, as well as several others around the metro.
Aldi began in 1961, when the Albrecht family opened their first discount grocery store in Germany. Sixteen years later, they opened Aldi in Iowa. Today, there are around 2,400 stores across the country.
Meanwhile, in Kansas City, the Country Club Plaza’s new owners, HP Village Partners, teased a possible Trader Joe’s or something similar to it coming to the shopping center.
