Hundreds of residents in Baker Lake, Nunavut, were without power for more than 24 hours after a storm hit the community on Tuesday.

As of Thursday morning, only about 11 industrial customers remain without power, according to the Qulliq Energy Corporation's Facebook page.

Wednesday evening, the Hamlet of Baker Lake said on social media about 139 remaining customers were without power. The hamlet opened its recreation centre for those needing a warm place overnight.

Downed lines and power poles

Strong winds and sleet downed power lines and pulled up poles on Tuesday.

Ernest Douglas, the president and CEO of Qulliq Energy Corporation, said that four power poles were "compromised." He added that a maintenance crew — about six people — arrived in the community about noon on Wednesday.

"The winds are a factor when you're talking about power poles and power lines," said Douglas.

He added that crews were making sure "that the work is able to be completed safely and effectively and as soon as we can."
