Tottenham confirm one positive coronavirus result in latest round of Premier League testing
A player or member of staff from Tottenham was the only individual to test positive for coronavirus in the latest round of Premier League testing, the club has confirmed.
In another encouraging outcome for Project Restart, the top-flight announced just one positive from 1,197 players and staff tested from all 20 clubs on Monday and Tuesday.
Spurs, who had previously returned no positive results, would not reveal the individual's identity but said they were "currently asymptomatic" and would self-isolate for seven days, in line with Premier League protocol.
If it is a player, he will not be allowed to rejoin contact training for a further week, potentially leaving him a doubt for the Premier League restart.
The top-flight is set to restart in less than two weeks on June 17, with Arsenal's trip to Manchester City and Aston Villa vs Sheffield United, with Spurs expected to resume against Manchester United on the weekend of June 20-21. The revised fixture list is expected to be announced this week.
The result from the fifth round of testing takes the total number of positives in the top-flight to 13 from 5,079 tests since the centralised programme began on May 17-18, with tests being conducted twice weekly.
There were no positives from 1,130 individuals tested in the previous round, while the first three rounds produced six, two and four positive results, respectively.
The current protocol as part of Project Restart rules that in any case of a Premier League player returning a positive test he would be kept away from group training for a total of 14 days, including the seven days of self-isolation.
Although players can return to the training ground for individual sessions on day eight, subject to a negative test result, they may not be match sharp ahead of their first game back.
In a statement Spurs said: "We have been informed by the Premier League that we have received one positive test for COVID-19 following the latest round of testing at our Training Centre. Due to medical confidentiality, the individual’s name will not be disclosed.
"They are currently asymptomatic and will now self-isolate for seven days, in line with Premier League protocol, before undergoing further testing.
"We shall continue to strictly adhere to the Premier League’s Return to Training protocol, which ensures our Training Centre remains a safe and virus-free working environment."
