Be prepared for any emergency, says P.E.I. EMO

The P.E.I. Emergency Measures Organization is reminding Islanders to be prepared for any emergency situation.

In a news release, provincial emergency management coordinator Tanya Mullally says it's a good time during emergency preparedness week to create a plan and get emergency kits ready.

"It is important that all Islanders get prepared for an emergency by learning the risks, making a plan and preparing an emergency kit," said Mullally.

"If an emergency happens in your community, it may take emergency workers some time to reach Islanders in need of help, so everyone should be ready to take care of themselves and their family members for a minimum of 72 hours."

Mullally says parents should talk to children about what could happen in various emergency situations.

"Help them prepare by asking them to help pack an emergency kit, and take time to talk with them about potential emergency situations and what to do when they occur," said Mullally.

Seniors' Secretariat chairperson Mary Hughes said seniors need to be prepared as well.

"Seniors are encouraged to make an emergency plan that includes details about health care requirements and contact information for family and friends," said Hughes.

Mullally said people with mobility limitations should prepare an emergency kit with supplies for their mobility equipment.

"Those who use a wheelchair may want to include a tire patch kit and heavy gloves, in case an evacuation is required."
