Prince Albert launches emergency mass notification service

The Prince Albert Fire Department has launched PA Alert, a city-wide emergency mass notification service.

The technology is designed to allow the city's fire department to send out text messages and emails to residents in the event of an emergency.

"What it does for us is it gives us the ability to get accurate information, important information out to the people that we need to. Rather than picking up a telephone and calling a list of contacts we can do it with a click of the button," said Deputy Chief Corey Rodgers.

The messages can be targeted to specific areas or even sent city-wide.

In order for PA Alert to work, residents need to create a customized account first. People can choose whether they prefer to receive notifications through text messages, email, pager, fax machine, etc.

The fire department is embarking on a sign-up campaign over the next eight weeks.

Residents can register through www.paalert.ca.

The same or similar technology has already been implemented in Saskatoon, Estevan, Weyburn, Warman and Swift Current.

Regina is planning to launch its system at the end of June or July.
