Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have issued a new statement after confirming that they would no longer use the word ‘royal’ in their branding.

The couple, who announced in January that they would be stepping down from Royal duties, had planned to use the trademarked branding ‘Sussex Royal’ in their new lives but confirmed earlier this week that they would ditch the word 'royal' after their lives as working royals ends in March.

However, whilst the couple have agreed to no longer use the name, their latest statement points out that there is no jurisdiction by The Monarchy over the use of the word ‘Royal’ overseas.

On Friday night, the couple’s spokesperson confirmed that trademark applications for the 'Sussex Royal' name have been removed.

"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not intend to use ‘Sussex Royal’ in any territory post Spring 2020," the spokesperson said.

But now, it seems the couple want us to know that they didn't need to drop the brand name.

The statement, published on their official website sussexroyal.com, reads:

While there is not any jurisdiction by The Monarchy or Cabinet Office over the use of the word ‘Royal’ overseas, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not intend to use ‘Sussex Royal’ or any iteration of the word ‘Royal’ in any territory (either within the UK or otherwise) when the transition occurs Spring 2020. As The Duke and Duchess of Sussex continue to develop their non-profit organisation and plan for their future, we hope that you use this site as the source for factual information. In Spring 2020, their digital channels will be refreshed as they introduce the next exciting phase to you. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex eagerly await the opportunity to share more with you and greatly appreciate your support!

The spokesperson also revealed earlier this month that the Duke and Duchess will make their last appearance as senior members of the Royal family with the Queen and the rest of the Royal family at the Commonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey on March 9.

Their new lives will officially begin on April 1 after their final appearances when they will be represented officially by their soon-to-be-launched charitable foundation which as of now, remains unnamed.
