Prince William, Duchess Kate, and Their Kids Visit the Isles of Scilly
Although far-flung summer getaways are out of the question this year, Prince William and Duchess Kate still found a way to squeeze in a little escape for their family of five this past week. According to the U.K.'s Mirror, the royal pair and their three young children—George, Charlotte, and Louis—spent time on the Isles of Scilly, just off the coast of Cornwall, an island destination that holds particular significance for Prince William.
When he was a young boy, he and his brother, Prince Harry, explored the archipelago on bicycle with their parents, Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Photographs of the family of four during a 1989 trip show a young Prince William grinning while perched atop a bike. Colorful flora and greenery abound in the background. Prince William also brought Duchess Kate to the beach town in 2016; the pair toured the Tresco Abbey Garden and rode boats along the coast.
In addition to wildlife and plentiful flora, the Isles of Scilly are also known for hosting hundreds of archaeological sites of interest, including the remains of centuries-old castles, and are accessible via helicopter or boat. Additionally, though they’re a short 20-minute helicopter ride away from Cornwall, the Isles boast their own microclimate, never falling below 50 degrees Farenheit in the fall, making them an ideal escape year-round.
The royal family’s staycation marks one of the first times they have ventured out together as a family since pandemic lockdown was instated earlier this spring. The family has been quarantining at their Anmer Hall estate, and recently celebrated their eldest son Prince George’s seventh birthday at home. The rest of the royal family has similarly been spending their time on strict lockdown, with the exception of Princess Beatrice’s intimate royal wedding last month, which the Queen and Prince Philip attended.
