Princess Catharina-Amalia Has a Rare Tiara Moment in the Sparkling Dutch Star Tiara
The heir to the Dutch throne, Princess Catharina-Amalia, just turned 21—and she's beginning to find her royal style.
At a state banquet welcoming the President of Portugal, Princess Catharina-Amalia opted for a purple sequin gown designed by Tadashi Shoji, but all eyes were on her tiara: the Princess chose her mother Queen Máxima's Dutch Star Tiara.
“I love tiaras,” the Princess told writer Claudia de Breij in a 2021 biography. “Show me a tiara, and I'll know where it came from. I can recognize all the tiaras of Europe. I used to put them on from my mother. Then there would be one on her make-up table and I would have it directly on my head.”
The Dutch Star Tiara made its debut in 2002, when Queen Máxima, then Máxima Zorreguieta, married King Willem Alexander (then the Crown Prince).
According to Lauren Kiehna of The Court Jeweller, “Máxima chose something of a frankentiara—a piece that features elements of two different items of jewelry mixed together to make a new tiara—for her wedding day.” She combined the Pearl Button Tiara, which was first worn by Queen Juliana in 1965, with diamond stars that belonged to Queen Emma. As Kiehna writes, “Emma had been given two sets of diamond star brooches when she married King Wilem III in 1879.”
Máxima last wore the tiara in 2013; her daughter, Princess Amalia, debuted in 2022 and wore it again last night. For the State Banquet, Queen Máxima chose the Mellerio Ruby Parure Tiara:
Princess Catharina-Amalia is currently a student at the University of Amsterdam. According to the Dutch royal house, “When her academic commitments permit, the Princess will participate in Prinsjesdag and in visits and receptions in preparation for her future role as head of state. The same applies to her involvement in King’s Day and photo sessions with the royal family.”
