One day, but hopefully not too soon because long live the Queen, Prince Charles will become the King of England. You know, Prince Charles? The Queen's eldest son, the man who constantly looks super chuffed? This dude!
Anyway, once he's done owning the throne (read: once he passes away 😬), Prince William will become King of England. And then, in the midst of all these royal changes, a whole MESS of title switch-ups will take place, including for lil Princess Charlotte.
Let's rewind for a minute before we get to Charlotte. The first wave of title changes will occur as soon as Charles becomes King, right? So Prince William will presumably be gifted his dad's former title, the Prince of Wales, an honor that's been bestowed upon the heir apparent since the 14th century. And Kate Middleton will likely become Princess of Wales, just like Diana before her.
But unlike her parents, Charlotte's title probably won't change when Charles is King. However, royal experts speculate that when Charlotte's dad takes the throne, she may inherit a title from Princess Anne:
While most of us commoners refer to Princess Anne as, well, Princess Anne, she's technically the "Princess Royal," a title usually given to the monarch's eldest daughter. (Quick review: Charlotte is most definitely future monarch William's eldest daughter.) But before you're all "Woaaaahhh, Charlotte's gonna be so fancy when her dad becomes King," there are a few catches to keep in mind.
1. The Princess Royal title isn't automatically inherited. Queen Elizabeth didn't bother giving Anne her ultra fancy moniker until she was 36, so presumably she had to earn it.
2. There can only be one Princess Royal at a time, and Anne is only 68 years old. So even if Princess Charlotte gets the title, she won't be able to use it until her great aunt passes away-which hopefully won't be for a long time. Long live the Princess Royal!
By the way, if you want a little history lesson that I *promise* is super interesting, the Princess Royal title was basically made up by King Charles I's wife Queen Henrietta. Girlfriend just wanted to make sure her daughter was extra fancy, which is how Princess Mary became the first person to carry the name. Here she is looking super salty and holding an orange, as ya do.
