The Princess of Wales paid a special tribute to the late Queen at a Buckingham Palace event on Saturday.

Catherine was one of a number of royals – including her husband Prince William and King Charles and the Queen Consort – to attend a lunch held for the Commonwealth nations.

For the important occasion the mother-of-three wore all black, as befits the mourning period ahead of Her Majesty's funeral on Monday.

She opted for a long-sleeved dress with a pleated skirt by Emilia Wickstead, and finished off her ensemble with a black heels by Gianvito Rossi.

However, the princess also added a more personal touch to her ensemble, and accessorised with jewellery bequeathed to her by the Queen.

This included a three-strand pearl necklace, which she wore earlier in the week to receive Her Majesty's coffin at Buckingham Palace.

For this latest appearance, Catherine also donned a pair of pearl drop earrings, which likewise belonged to the late monarch.

They have also been spotted by royal fans on another recent occasion, when she accompanied the Prince of Wales to visit an army base in Surrey.

Last Wednesday, for the ceremonial procession, the princess wore a diamond leaf brooch that had previously belonged to the Queen.

For the same occasion, she also wore Collingwood pearl drop earrings from the collection of the late Princess Diana.

The prevalence of pearls in Catherine's wardrobe is due to the fact they are considered "mourning jewellery" and are thought to commemorate loved ones because they symbolise tears.

According to The Telegraph, they have been a tradition for royal women since Queen Victoria's reign, when she only appeared in strands of pearls following the death of her husband Prince Albert in 1861.
