A man involved in a brazen daylight shooting in Saskatoon two years ago is going to prison.

Mohamed Abdula Ali pleaded guilty last week at Saskatoon Court of King's Bench to manslaughter and possessing a handgun while prohibited. Judge Mona Dovell accepted a joint submission for a six-year sentence.

There is a ban on publishing details from the hearing.

In 2022, Saskatoon police said they were called to an apartment building at 710 Melrose Ave. around 4:30 p.m. CST on May 19 after reports of gunfire in the neighbourhood.

They found Brandon Baxandall, 29, fatally wounded on the pavement outside the three-storey building.

Police said they also responded to reports of shots fired on Main Street near the Idylwyld Freeway sound wall, two blocks from the Melrose building, at the same time.

Two other men were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds. Police said 35-year-old Mohamed Abdula Ali was one of them.

Court documents showed that Ali lived in an apartment in the building where the gunshots were reported.

Police are still hunting for 33-year-old Jonathan Ouellet-Gendron, who is facing a first-degree murder charge in connection with Baxandall's death.
