Private plane bound for Las Vegas crashes into Lake Mead, Nevada officials say

A private plane with two people aboard crashed into Lake Mead after developing mechanical trouble on its way to North Las Vegas, officials in Nevada reported.

The small plane landed in the lake about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, the National Park Service said in a news release.

The single-engine Cessna 182 left the Grand Canyon Airport in Arizona about 90 minutes earlier but reported mechanical problems before vanishing from radar, KLAS reported.

National Park Service rescue boats and a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department helicopter responded, rescuing the two people aboard, the National Park Service said.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate. No one was injured in the crash in the Virgin Basin area of the lake.

Several bodies have been discovered in Lake Mead in recent months as the reservoir continues to shrink during drought-like conditions.
