Proud Paradise parents cheer on Team Canada's Sarah Davis

For the first time, a woman from Newfoundland and Labrador is representing Canada's women's hockey team — and she's doing it in Sweden.

Back in March, 22-year-old Sarah Davis of Paradise was selected to play forward for Team Canada.

This weekend, the team is in Malmo, Sweden for the world championships.

Family and friends gathered at the Davis family home in Paradise Saturday afternoon to watch the rookie take the ice.

"It was really exciting," said mother Donna Davis.

"We're so proud of her to represent our province and our country. She, herself, is over the moon about the fact that she's picked to play for Team Canada," she said.

"It's a great day — a great day for her, and a great day for us as well."

Father Jeff Davis said watching his daughter play against the United States was a nerve-racking experience.

He was also surprised by the amount of ice time his daughter received, given that she's still a new member of the team.

"Hopefully she'll stick with this team for a couple of years," he said.

"Possibly to the next Olympics, but there's no guarantee of that — they've got a lot of girls coming up. We hope for the best," he said.

The U.S. defeated Team Canada 4-2.

Davis and her teammates will face off against Russia on Sunday.
