Of all provinces, Saskatchewan is Canada's king of the coolers

Once known as the home of devoted rye-sippers, it now appears Saskatchewan is Canada's king of the coolers.

According to a Statistics Canada report on alcohol consumption released Monday, Saskatchewan spends more per capita on coolers every year — $44.60 — than any other province.

The Canadian annual average is $23.50 worth of coolers, a category that also includes "ciders and other refreshment beverages."

Meanwhile, when it comes to wine consumption, Saskatchewan lags every other province, with a per capita average of $92.60 spent annually. Canada-wide, per capita wine purchases total $216.20 annually.

Hard liquor drinkers in Saskatchewan spend about $231.20 per year, while beer purchases work out to $315.70 per year.

Although the legal drinking age in Saskatchewan is 19, Statistics Canada says it tracks alcohol sales for those 15 years and older "in accordance with the practice of Health Canada in presenting trends that are more realistic in the consumption of alcoholic beverages."

The statistics cover the fiscal year than ended March 31, 2014.
