Public school has higher enrolment, hires 66 teachers

Due to to an unexpected increase in elementary enrolment, the Greater Essex District School Board hired 66 teachers this summer.

There are almost 600 more students enrolled this year than last.

Superintendent John Howitt said more families are moving into the area.

"We do, anecdotally, have comments from principals that have shared with us that we have a number of students new to the country, a number of students new to the province of Ontario," Howitt said. "A vast number of students new to Windsor and Essex County that have come from other parts of the province."

Other students have also switched to the public board because of the closure of Catholic schools.

Some teachers were also hired because 16 schools added full-time kindergarten.

Howitt said all 66 teachers were hired from the board's occasional teachers list.

"Now we've got the opportunity to go out and replenish that list with new hires from the faculty of education and teacher graduates who are anxious to get on," Howitt said.
