Pubs allowed to serve alcohol early for Olympic hockey

Some pubs in Edmonton are being allowed to serve alcohol during early morning telecasts of Olympic hockey.

The Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission has granted permission to Kelly’s Pub on 104th Street to serve liquor earlier than the usual start time of 10 a.m.

Kelly’s is opening at 8 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday and every weekday next week. They have also been allowed to open at 5 a.m. for the men’s gold medal hockey game on Feb. 23.

"It was a lot of work. We sent in for all the Olympic games," said Jessica Chambul, a server and bartender at Kelly's Pub.

"We wanted to be open early every day. But AGLC has to hold back a little bit on that, so it took about a week of negotiations."

Central Social Hall, another downtown pub, is also taking advantage of Olympic hockey by opening at 9:30 a.m. two mornings this week and another two next week.
