Quebec City gives Calgary music pavilion

Quebec City is giving Calgary a music pavilion, which will be built in the East Village at the confluence of the Elbow and Bow rivers.

The gazebo structure will be a replica of a popular one located in historic Quebec City, Calgary's sister city since 1956.

The gift reciprocates Calgary's gift to the Quebec capital of a sculpture by Joe Fafard in 2008 to mark that city's 400th anniversary.

"We sincerely hope that this music pavilion, which is a reflection of our close cultural relationship with Calgarians … will host cultural programming that celebrates all that is great about Calgary and Calgarians. We hope you enjoy," said Quebec City Deputy Mayor Michelle Morin-Doyle.

The gift was originally intended to mark the Stampede's centennial in 2012. But the flood the following year delayed the selection of an appropriate site, said Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi.

"It is an honour to receive this gift, on behalf of all Calgarians, from our sister city and its citizens," he said.

The site is located along the Jack and Jean Leslie RiverWalk and takes advantage of a natural amphitheatre, the mayor's office said in a release.

The project will be completed next year.
