Quebec City's Triomphe sports gala cancelled

A major sports award ceremony in Quebec City is being cancelled because of a scheduling conflict with the playoffs in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The gala honouring athletes from the Quebec City region was supposed to take place on April 30 at the city's Colisée arena.

But the decision was made to call it off this year after the Quebec City Remparts hockey team scheduled game four of their playoff series for April 28.

Organizers of the gala say that does not give them enough time to set up for their event.

1400 athletes and invitees were supposed to take part in the Triomphe gala which honours athletic excellence in and around the Quebec City area.

Officials with the ExpoCité organization which manages the arena insist they did everything possible to try and accommodate both events.

Businessman Marcel Aubut who runs the Triomphe gala called ExpoCité's handling of the conflict unprofessional and insisted his event should have gotten priority.

Aubut said he will find some other way to honour the athletes who were supposed to attend the awards gala, although he cannot yet say what that might be.
