Queen Camilla was notably absent from the Remembrance Sunday events this weekend after doctors advised she rest while suffering from a chest infection. However, the 77-year-old wife of King Charles was back at work this week with a slightly modified program to aid her recovery.
The Queen hosted a reception at Clarence House today for authors shortlisted for this year’s Booker Prize. An avid reader, Camilla smiled as she entered the room to meet the authors at an intimate event in her London residence. “I’m on the mend,” she told author Percival Everett, whose book James has been shortlisted for the award.

On Saturday, Buckingham Palace announced that the Queen would not be attending Remembrance events on Saturday evening or Sunday morning “to ensure a full recovery from a seasonal chest infection and to protect others from any potential risk.” Today, it was made clear that she would attend the Booker Prize reception but would not be at the Royal Film performance on Wednesday evening. The King is now scheduled to attend this screening alone.
Promoting literacy has been a significant pillar of Camilla’s royal work for several years. “Her Majesty understands the joy of reading and the impact of literacy in creating life opportunities,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement about the event today. As Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla became Patron of organizations including Book Trust, the National Literacy Trust and Coram Beanstalk. She has also created Instagram book club The Queen’s Reading Room where she shares recommendations and interviews with authors.
