Will There Be a The Queen’s Gambit Season 2?
The Queen’s Gambit, Netflix’s limited-series adaptation of Walter Trevis’s novel of the same name, premiered on October 23. The seven-episode series follows Beth Harmon (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) from her hardscrabble youth in an orphanage through to her life as a world-renown chess champion, and features a stellar supporting cast including Marielle Heller, Bill Camp, Harry Melling, Moses Ingram, and more. The show—which has been nominated for 18 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Taylor-Joy—follows the book closely, however there’s still a chance that the limited series could extend the story.

The Queen’s Gambit is billed as a limited series, so it’s no surprise that Netflix hasn’t made any announcements about a possible second installment. Scott Frank, a writer, director, and producer on the series, also made Godless, the 2017 Netflix series that only ran for seven episodes—so he’s used to telling complete stories in one go. But that doesn’t mean that if audience demand is there, another installment of Gambit is out of the question.
There’s only one book.
The Queen’s Gambit hews closely to Trevis’s 1983 novel, so there’s no additional source material for a second season—but that hasn’t stopped other series, like Game of Thrones, from blazing past where the books that inspired them have left off.
“We’ve had a lot of fun talking about what happens tomorrow,” executive producer William Horberg tells T&C. “The last scene feels like a beautiful note to end the show on, so I’m not sure if we want to go on and answer that question. Maybe we can just let the audience imagine what comes next.”
The cast isn’t opposed.
“If I've learned anything from being in this industry, it's never say never,” series star Anya Taylor-Joy tells T&C of a possible second season. “I adore the character, and I would certainly come back if I was asked to, but I do think we leave Beth in a good place. I think the rest of her life will surely be an adventure as well, but in the quest that she goes on in this to find some form of peace, just some form of being able to be happy with who she is. I think it ends in a nice place.”
Harry Melling, who plays Harry Beltik on the series, says, "It’d be good, right, a Queen’s Gambit part two? The place we end in the limited series is the place we end in the book. I don’t know if there can be another one, but stranger things have happened."

When the Golden Globes were announced, The Queen's Gambit was recognized with two nominations, one for Best Television Limited Series and one for Anya Taylor-Joy in the Best Actress in a Limited Series category.
