The Queen was reportedly worried that Prince Harry was “too in love” with Meghan Markle when they married, a new book has claimed.

Author of Elizabeth: an Intimate Portrait, Gyles Brandreth said: “The only concern the Queen let slip in the early days of the Sussexes’ marriage was to wonder to a friend if Harry wasn’t ‘perhaps a little over-in-love’.”

Brandreth added in an extract of the book published by The Mail on Sunday: “This was as far as she came — to my knowledge at least — to ever uttering a word against the new Duchess of Sussex.”

Harry and Meghan were engaged by the end of 2017, and the new biography claims that the news made the Queen “truly delighted” and that Her Majesty wanted to do “everything she could” to make Meghan feel welcome.

The book also claims that the Queen thought Meghan and Harry’s daughter’s name, Lilibet, was “very pretty and seems just right”. Lilibet was the nickname given to the Queen by her family members and is now the moniker of Harry and Meghan’s one-year-old daughter, known as Lily.

Harry and Meghan decided to step down as senior members of the Royal Family in January 2020 and moved to the US with their son, Archie, three. Lilibet was born 18 months later in June 2021.

In March 2021, Harry and Meghan sat down with Oprah Winfrey for a wide-ranging interview that included the couple accusing one unnamed member of the Royal Family of saying racist comments before the birth of their first child.

Before the interview aired, the new biography claims that the late Prince Philip thought it was madness, while the Queen is said to have dismissed it as “television nonsense”.
