Christmas for the royals may take place at the Queen's sprawling Norfolk country estate, but the family's Christmas tree tradition is something we can definitely relate to.

The Queen has given a small insight into how she and her family celebrate Christmas in an upcoming ITV documentary with Sir David Attenborough about nature conversation called The Queen's Green Planet.

Her Majesty has revealed how her youngest great-grandchildren Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Mia Tindall love to help decorate the Christmas tree and knock the decorations off even more.

While speaking with Mr Neil Turner, a senior castle attendant, about her splendid Christmas tree, the Queen remarks: 'It's an interesting fat one isn't it?'

When Turner tells Her Majesty he painstakingly decorated the tree, the monarch says: 'Yes, that is always the problem, is the children love knocking those [decorations] off.

'Well my great-grandchildren do, anyway they enjoy themselves. And the great thing is to make them decorate it and they're a bit more careful.'

The Queen added: 'It always looks jolly.'

Her Majesty and Attenborough have joined forces for the documentary which explores the Queen's Commonwealth Canopy (QCC) project, which is creating a network of forest conservation initiatives across all 53 Commonwealth countries to mark Her Majesty's lifetime's service to the Commonwealth, while preserving natural habitat for future generations.

The programme captures the pair walking through Buckingham Palace's garden last summer. The Queen also disclosed to Attenborough about the one gift she always receives, before joking that she is 'difficult to buy for'.

While discussing plants, the broadcaster says: 'I imagine you must be given quite a lot of roses.'

'I've been quite difficult to give presents to, so they've said, "Oh, let's give her a plant",' the 91-year-old monarch replied.

Which is obviously why Kate Middleton once opted for a homemade chutney...

The Queen's Green Planet airs on ITV at 9pm on Monday 16 April.
