Abdiweli Abdullahi, Mohamed Abdiwal Dirie slain in double shooting near Queen West

Toronto police have identified the two men, both 26, who were shot dead in an condo unit near West Queen West early Sunday morning.

Abdiweli Abdullahi and Mohamed Abdiwal Dirie, both of Toronto, were found dead in an apartment on the 22nd floor of the Edge at Triangle Park condo building at 36 Lisgar St. around 7 a.m. Sunday, police said.

Dirie was one of dozens arrested in the Project Traveller raids in 2013, police confirmed.

Project Traveller, which was launched in 2012 and targeted alleged gang members and drug dealers, became well-known in Toronto after police recovered a video of former mayor Rob Ford smoking crack cocaine during the investigation.

Investigators probing Sunday's double shooting are now looking for four men, including one who speaks with a southern drawl, who they believe may have been involved in the incident.

Ellie Bergeron, who lives in a unit near the apartment, said she woke up to the sound of gunshots followed by a noise outside her unit after a woman had leapt onto her balcony.

"She was just smoking a cigarette. She had no idea what was going on behind her … she heard the gunshots and then she jumped over onto my balcony," Bergeron said.

She let the woman into her apartment, and urged her to stay, but the woman left and went back to the other unit.

"Literally two minutes later she just let out the most bone chilling scream ever."

Bergeron called 911 and soon police were on scene, where they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds.

Toronto police say they are looking for four persons of interest, who are all in their mid-twenties.

Det. Sgt. Tam Bui says one man has "a southern drawl, which we think is unique."

Another of the men is described as being of Somalian or east-African descent, Bui said.

Police are also looking for two vehicles, including a silver compact car that has some damage and a brown compact car.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

These deaths mark the 24th and 25th homicides in Toronto this year.
