A passenger learned a harsh lesson in life from Uber this week when he fell asleep in the back of a cab and was taken on a 250 mile round trip from Brixton to Croydon… via Bristol.

Aaron Wray wanted to travel from a night out in Brixton to his home in Croydon – a 30 minute journey that should have cost around £20 – but ended up spending five hours in the car at a cost of £467.

The 18-year-old spent two hours in the Uber travelling across the breadth of the country while snoozing in the back.

Uber says the 18-year-old computer science student mistyped his destination – and since Wray goes to university in Bristol it seems at least plausible.

But Wray maintains that he confirmed the postcode when he got in the Uber and the Bristol address was added by the driver later.

He woke up in the Uber as it headed back to London along the M4, and says he didn’t realise he had even been to Bristol until he looked at his receipt the next day.

Mr Wray told The Sun: “I got home at about 8am or 9am. It was all my money for a month gone. I was furious.”

A screengrab of his text message exchange with a friend about the ordeal has been shared on Twitter thousands of times.

An Uber spokesperson said, “We tried to contact the rider, but our systems show they set an address in Bristol as their destination.

“When they arrived and it became clear this was an error, the driver returned to London to drop them off in Croydon.

“This was clearly an unfortunate mistake so as a gesture of goodwill we would like to offer the rider a refund.”
