Rafid Jihad sentencing hearing to continue in September

A sentencing hearing for a man found guilty of the attempted murder of a Windsor teenager will continue this fall.

Rafid Jihad was previously found guilty of attempted murder in a hammer attack on a teenage boy that occurred last year.

Jihad was in a Windsor court on Thursday for a sentencing hearing that had previously begun. The judge said today that it will continue in September.

Jihad did not make a statement in court on Thursday, though he is expected to write a letter to the judge.

The Crown has said it is seeking a six- to eight-year sentence for Jihad, while his lawyer is asking for a 44-month sentence, less time served, along with three years of probation.

Jihad's lawyer was only recently made aware of the fact his client is not a Canadian citizen.

The court heard Thursday that Jihad would lose his permanent resident status if he is given a sentence of more than six months.

The Crown said Thursday that Jihad is likely to lose that status, but deportation is not a certainty for him.
