Rain to bring rising river levels and low-level flooding
Heavy rainfall predicted for Wednesday in the foothills west of Edmonton is expected to raise river levels, though no major flooding is expected.
The low pressure system is expected to move into the province late Tuesday with the greatest amounts of precipitation, 50 to 60 millimetres, to fall in an area from Peace River to Swan Hills and down to Red Deer.
The highest rainfall is expected to occur Wednesday morning. The province has issued high streamflow advisories for the Athabasca River, McLeod River, Paddle and Pembina Rivers, North Saskatchewan River and Red Deer River.
Water level rises could rise up to a metre to a metre and a half in the smaller creeks and streams within the advisory area, a news release said.
However the heightened levels do not represent a significant flood risk, though minor flooding of low-lying areas is likely and overland flooding is possible.
The news release also states it is also possible that rising water levels may lift ice left along creek banks increasing the risk for ice jams.
