Rainbow flag raised at Saskatchewan Legislature

The rainbow flag was raised at the Saskatchewan Legislature Monday, to mark the start of Pride Month in the province.

Culture minister Mark Docherty was on hand to help with the ceremony. Pride Month is dedicated to recognizing gender and sexual diversity.

Many who attended the ceremony noted that such events would not have been possible just a few years ago.

"People had to hide their true identities otherwise they might get fired from their jobs," Lisa Phillipson, a member of Regina Pride, said. "We've come a long way where we actually have the job stability and love and care of all our citizens around us."

Several Saskatchewan cities have Pride Festivals. Saskatoon's begins June 7. Regina Pride Week begins June 15.
