Raleigh mother accused of strangling, pointing handgun at her child
A Raleigh woman faces multiple charges, including attempted first-degree murder, after police say she repeatedly abused her child.
Matquisha Alexis Jones, 28, of Heck Street, is also charged with assault by strangulation, negligent child abuse resulting in serious physical injury, and misdemeanor assault by pointing a gun, according to her arrest warrant. The statute Jones was charged under — N.C. General Statute 14-318.4(a5) — indicates the child was under 16 at the time.
Jones is accused of strangling and pointing a handgun at the child on April 15, 2023, the warrant states. It’s unclear why there was a delay in Jones’ arrest.
The warrant also claims Jones inflicted a “[m]ultitude of physical, psychological, and emotional instances of abuse causing the victim to have long-term anxiety and post-traumatic stress that requires regular therapy intervention.”
Jones was arrested Friday in the 5900 block of Timber Creek Lane, jail records show. She remained in the Wake County Detention Center on Monday with bail set at $600,000 secured. If she posts bail, she cannot contact her child, according to the terms of her release.
Jones is set to next appear in court Jan. 21, court records show.
