Rally in Regina raises concerns about Husky oil spill

About 10 people gathered in front of the Provincial Legislature in Regina Saturday to express concern about the Husky oil spill into the North Saskatchewan River.

"We need to come together," Larry Neufeld, one of the people at the rally, said. "We need to find a way to prevent things like this from happening again in the future."

Neufeld, who is deputy leader of the Green Party, also criticized how information about the pipeline rupture has been released.

"Husky should … be more transparent about what exactly all happened," Neufeld said. "And give us a better idea of exactly what the timeline is, on when this whole thing occurred."

Husky Energy reported on July 21 that oil from a pipeline entered the river near Maidstone, Sask. It has since estimated that 200,000 to 250,000 litres of product leaked.

As of Friday, provincial officials said about 106,000 litres of oil had been recovered. Communities that use the river as a water source have been scrambling to meet their needs. It's estimated that about 80,000 people rely on the river as their primary water source.

Neufeld said rallies, like the one held Saturday, are important.

"We need to have rallies like this," he said. "We need to have people to become aware of what is happening in regards to our environment and what is happening with pipelines."
