Rally supports Katimavik program

A rally on the steps of the Manitoba legislature Saturday draws attention to funding cuts facing the volunteerism program, Katimavik.

People in Winnipeg gathered in a show of support for Katimavik, a national program that promotes youth volunteerism.

The program's federal funding was cut in the spring budget, putting the future of Katimavik in jeopardy.

The rally was held on the steps of the provincial legislature Saturday and people who participated told CBC News they hope federal funding would not end.

"To get the funding reinstated," Meghan Chorney, a Katimavik volunteer said. "To raise awareness. To tell people that there are people that want the funding and need the funding. And this is a program that Canada needs."
