Ravens CB Marlon Humphrey tweets he tested positive for COVID-19 day after loss to Steelers

Marlon Humphrey, star cornerback for the Baltimore Ravens, announced Monday on Twitter that he’s tested positive for COVID-19.

Typically we get a team press release first in these situations, but one of those followed soon after.

The Ravens didn’t identify Humphrey, but his announcement means there’s no mystery as to which Ravens player tested positive.

Ravens in intensive protocol

Following Humphrey’s positive test, the entire Ravens organization has entered the NFL’s “intensive protocol.” Those heightened protocols require every player and coach to take and pass a quick-turnaround COVID-19 test before entering the practice facility. All meetings will be virtual and a limited number of people are allowed in the team’s locker room and weight room at one time. At practice, every player must wear gloves and a mask or a clear face shield, and they must be six feet away from each other if they need to remove it.

Humphrey had cold symptoms

Humphrey played 100 percent of the defensive snaps against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, but there’s not a lot of concern that he might have passed it on to them while on the field. There’s been zero evidence of on-field transmission so far, and there have been numerous chances for it to happen since the NFL season started. We’ll know whether that remains true if the Steelers test negative later this week, but their most recent tests have reportedly come back negative and the team is also in the intensive protocol.

What’s slightly more concerning is that Humphrey was sent home last week with cold symptoms, returning to practice the next day.

It’s hard to imagine that Humphrey would have been allowed to come back if he hadn’t continually tested negative, especially since he was exhibiting cold symptoms (which intersect with COVID-19 symptoms). But it’s still necessary for the Ravens to be in the intensive protocol since it can take 3-14 days for a positive test to show up after contracting the virus, and it’s so easy to pass on to others.

More teams dealing with COVID issues

The Ravens aren’t the only NFL team dealing with COVID-19 issues on Monday. The Green Bay Packers announced that one of their players has tested positive, and the entire organization has entered the NFL’s intensive protocol.

The Cleveland Browns haven’t had a player test positive, but the team announced that they’re operating virtually on Monday after a player reported symptoms.
