Raw sewage dumped into Exploits River nothing new: mayor

People on social media were sharing a photo of a tanker dumping untreated waste water into the Exploits River earlier this week.

While many people seemed to be outraged at the idea of raw sewage going into the river, Bishop's Falls Mayor Bob Hobbs says it's nothing new.

According to Hobbs, untreated sewage has been going into the river for the last 100 years, but people usually don't see it.

Hobbs said the tanker was being used in this case because pumping stations were being cleaned to prepare for the installation of a new sewage treatment plant.

He added that once work on that facility is done, things will change.

"It will be the best system on the island," said Hobbs.

"You will take that glass of water before it goes into the river and it will be as clean as your drinking water."

The new $14-million treatment plant is expected to be up and running by the end of the summer, but until then raw sewage will continue to be dumped in the Exploits River.
