RCMP make arrest in cold case killing of Manitoba girl

RCMP say a woman lost control of an ATV an embankment by the Rivers Reservoir, also known as Lake Wahtopanah, and struck a man who was fishing. The woman died and the man was knocked into the water, where he is presumed drowned.

RCMP have made an arrest in the killing of a 14-year-old girl from Wabowden, Man.

Heather Mallett went missing in June 2011. Only one day after she went missing, her body was discovered by her sister in the community.

After an autopsy was completed, RCMP said her death was a homicide.

The northern Manitoba town has since named a park after Mallett and raised a $5,000 reward for information about her killing.

RCMP have never released how the girl was killed, but on Thursday, they confirmed a 19-year-old man had been charged with first-degree murder in Mallet's death.

Officers said they would not be releasing the man's name as he was a youth at the time of the girl's death.
