RCMP call Castor house fire deaths 'suspicious'

The remains found in a home destroyed by fire earlier this month in Castor, Alta., have been identified by RCMP as the 61-year-old homeowner Gordon Klaus and his 40-year-old daughter Monica Klaus.

Gordon's wife, 62-year-old Sandra Klaus, has not been accounted for but is presumed dead.

Police are now treating the deaths as suspicious, but say they will make no further comments on the ongoing investigation.

Monica had been visiting her parents in the small town, about 1.5 hours east of Red Deer.

Firefighters were called to the home early in the morning on Dec. 8 and found the house engulfed in flames when they arrived.

A funeral announcement has been posted online by the couple's only other child, Jason, thanking people for their thoughts and condolences.

"In this time of tragedy, on behalf of Jason and family we ask for your patience and love," it states.

The announcement says funeral arrangements will be made at a future time.

Castor is a small town of approximately 945 people in the Coronation RCMP's jurisdiction.
